A famous quote of George Washington's, anticipating the loss of lives to protect his retreat, is engraved on a huge marble block in Prospect Park.

Washington's retreat ran through Brooklyn, and some key events in the Battle of Long Island occurred here in Prospect Park. This is the Maryland Monument, and it bears Washington's quote, "Good God, what brave fellows I must this day lose." February 22 is Washington's birthday, of course. This pedestal is topped by a round marble column and a sphere. Another shot I have of this monument is here. Brooklyn, New York. | Filed in Brooklyn.
