A chute descends from a trestle, but what fed the chute is gone. Shipping cranes are in the background.

This chute is a remnant of the Revere Sugar Factory in Brooklyn. (Click and read a line down to abandoned sugar factory.) One of the scenes in "Across The Universe" was shot on just the other side of this chute, before some of the surrounding buildings were torn down. The neighborhood is in a process of redevelopment; there's a new Ikea beyond the building on the left, and behind me there's a large Fairway grocery store. The warehouse area I'm standing in dates from the Civil War, when ships were too large to berth in Manhattan, but the warehouses are now home to designers, architects, and even Blue Man Group. Red Hook, Brooklyn.
